The Evolution of Pizzas
Thursday, January 25, 2018
The Pizza market is a $128 billion dollar industry that is expected to grow by about 3% by 2020. Pizzas in one form or the other have been around for a long time. Archeologists have founded remnants of foods that resembled pizzas are far back as 79 AD in Pompeii. Since then, pizzas have been on an upwards spiral till today. They have come a long way from flatbreads topped with olive and garlic to the wide range of varieties and flavors available today. And since Thanksgiving is around the corner, pizza outlets around the country are working round the clock to meet customer demands. The love for pizza never ends!
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and trace the journey of pizza through time.
The early days of pizza
Ever since 500 BC, people in the Middle East have consumed some forms of pizza. They used to top flatbreads with dates, cheese, olive oil and herbs. Some poor Greek settlers have been found to have eaten their breads topped with tomatoes, cheese and oil. Ever since then people have experimented with their breads, topping them with different ingredients and toppings.
Introduction of the modern pizza
The modern form of pizza as we know it is definitely Italian. It originated from Naples and was made famous in 1889 when King Umberto and Queen Margherita went there to try the first pizza. The chef was creative and baked them a pizza in the colors of the Italian flag; red, white and green. The red came from tomatoes, the white from cheese and the green from basil leaves. This became famous as Pizza Margherita because the Queen absolutely loved it.
Pizza and the United States
Pizza came to the US in 1905 when Gennaro Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in Manhattan. However, pizza didn’t become famous here until after World War II when soldiers came back from Italy and Europe with a taste for pizza. Ever since then the pizza industry has only gone upwards at a rapid rate. Today pizza is available all around the world in a host of different flavors. The Chicago deep dish pizza, the New York thin crust etc., are just some of the versions that are available nowadays.
With evolving times, pizza has evolved too. Today, pizza is available frozen and in the form of rolls in packaged forms that are easily available at supermarkets around the world.
Food has always been associated with mental satisfaction more than appetite. It’s like it goes directly to the heart. Someone has said that: “Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Small, large, circle, square, thin crust, thick crust, stuffed crust, extra toppings, etc.”
