For the Love of Pizza
Tuesday, March 20, 2018
Hailing from Italy, pizza has quickly catapulted to become one of the most popular and most frequently consumed meals on the planet. While it originally started as a base and three toppings, i.e. tomato sauce, cheese and basil, the pizza Margherita depicting the colors of the Italian flag, today there are hundreds of different varieties around the world. From the Indian tandoori to the original Margherita, from the Hawaiian to the Indonesian Pizza Balado, people have topped pizza crusts with almost every ingredient imaginable, including PINEAPPLES!
We’re pretty sure you’re experiencing those hunger pangs already and your mouth filled with saliva is already imagining the cheesy goodness but we aren’t going to stop the torture just yet. Behold some of the most fascinating facts about pizza that’ll have you lifting that phone and ordering one right now.
The love for pizza’s in the US
The American population consumes an average of 350 slices of pizza every SECOND! Yes, you read that right, every second! If you’re a math nerd, this amounts to almost 21000 slices every minute, 1.26 million slices every hour and a staggering 30 million slices every day. The US population consumes around 3 billion pizzas every year. This is approximately one-third of the 5 billion pizzas sold worldwide.
The total number of outlets serving pizza in the US is around 76,000 and each one uses 55 boxes regularly, every day.
The most loved topping in America is pepperoni with around 36% of the population preferring it. Sausages are the closest contender at only 14%.
The national pizza month in the US is October and the most popular holiday for pizza consumption is the Super Bowl.
The magnitude of the pizza industry
The global pizza industry as of 2017 is worth a whopping $128 billion and the US market shares $44 billion of it. Consumer demand for pizza saw a 26% increase over the past year. Pizza has risen enormously in popularity from a small town in Italy to every nook and corner of the world today. The largest retailer of pizza globally is Pizza Hut with more than 12,000 outlets in over 90 countries.
Pizza delivery has become such a craze that companies are experimenting with innovative techniques like time-limit based deliveries and most recently delivering through drones. With the world drooling over this cheesy delight, it is no surprise the lengths to which pizza companies are going.
Pizza records from around the globe
The largest pizza to date according to the official Guinness World Records website was prepared in Italy in December 2012. The beast to feast on measured a whopping 13,580.28 ft2 and was named the “Ottavia” as a tribute to the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus.
The longest pizza ever was made in California and according to official figures; it measured 6,333 ft beating the previous record of 6082 ft set in Naples Italy.
There is even an insane record for the longest pizza delivery that covered a distance of more than 6861 miles and took the pizza on a journey from Cape Town, South Africa to Sydney, Australia. Wonder what kind of love it takes to have a pizza delivered from another continent 7000 miles away!
You can breathe a sigh of relief because we’ve decided to call it a day. If you were cunning enough you would’ve ordered that steamy cheesy delight by now. If were too mesmerized, might as well do it now. Happy munching!
